Bombs injure 12 in Bangkok

At least 12 people have been injured in a series of blasts in Bangkok. Two explosions have been reported at the city's two main airports, and two others took place elsewhere in the Thai capital.

Thousands of tourists, including at least 100 Russians, remain stranded at one of the airports after political rallies caused suspension of departing flights.

One of the bombs was throwned at anti-government protesters who have siezed Bangkok International Suvarnabhumi Airport. The attack, which left at least three people wounded, was aimed at protesters who were gathered about half a mile from the airport.

Protesters armed with iron bars broke through police lines and swarmed the passenger terminal in an attempt to prevent Thai Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat returning to the country from a summit in Peru. They are demanding the immediate resignation of the government, led by Somchai Wongsawat.

The airport authorities said they’ve tried to negotiate with the protesters but without success. They say the governor of Samut Prakan province, where the airport is located, had already asked the army to intervene.

Earlier, demonstrators using cars and trucks blocked the main road, cutting off access to the airport.

The Russian Consul in Thailand has warned tourists against travelling to Bangkok.

“The Russian embassy is maintaining contact with the Thai authorities and representatives of Russian airlines in Bangkok so that it can give assistance to tourists if necessary,” said a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry.
