“Pro-government rally in millions, opposition in hundreds”

Iran is celebrating 31 years since the Islamic Revolution. The overthrow of the Shah in 1979 saw the birth of the Islamic Republic.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has spoken at a rally in Tehran marking the anniversary, attended by thousands of pro-government supporters.

Doctor Seyyed Mohammad Marandi, from the University of Tehran, told RT that while the pro-Ahmadinejad rally featured millions, the opposition rally had a more modest attendance.

“The reformists, who are opposed to Ahmadinejad, have separated themselves completely from the so-called green movement. They took part in the pro-government rally, from which the green movement was kept away by police for their own safety,” Marandi said.
