“As politicians we shouldn’t deal with history” – new PACE president

Historians, not politicians, should decide about such sensitive issues as genocide, the new president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Mevlut Cavusoglu, told RT.

Speaking about the 1930s mass famine in Ukraine, he said it is not up to politicians to decide whether such historical events are genocide or not.

“Let historians study such events and come up with proposals about what it was. We politicians do not know very much about the history. And that is what I have proposed – I asked all sides to establish a joint study group to study history and to open the archives and all the documents available to everybody,” Mevlut Cavusoglu said.

He also added that an objective and balanced approach to all member countries is needed, without prejudices and double standards.
