CIS foreign ministers back Russian initiative on European security

The Commonwealth of Independent States – a union of 11 former Soviet republics – has given its backing for a Russian initiative to overhaul the security system of Europe.

The Foreign Ministers from the member-states have been meeting in Moscow.

And with Kazakhstan taking on the chairmanship of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe this year, it is likely that Russia's plans will move up the agenda.

There will be an informal summit of the OSCE this summer, a body which has been criticized by Russia's Foreign Minister in the past.

Independent analyst Vladimir Kozin says the overhaul of European Security is still at the top of Russia's international agenda.

“Europe is still confronted with a lot of problems related to security and in the immediate past we had massive NATO bombardment of former Yugoslavia in 1999. We unfortunately had the aggression of Georgia against South Ossetia some one-and-a-half years ago, and there could be other security-related risks and threats,” Kozin said. “It’s overloaded with conventional and tactical nuclear weapons and we have to replace non-functional security, so to say, with a wider and more comprehensive security – functional security – for the entire area.”
