Russia grabs first gold at athletics Euros

Russia has won its first gold at the 20th European Athletic Championships, which kicked off in Barcelona on June 26.

Stanislav Emelyanov crossed the finish line first at Men's 20-kilometer Walk.

The 19-year-old Russian led the race with Olympic 50-kilometer champion Alex Schwazer from the start, before the Russian eventually powered past the Italian, beating him by around half a minute.

"I tried to catch up with Emelyanov but he was in top shape today. Now I hope to recover in time for the 50-km walk," Schwazer told Reuters news agency.

Portugal's Joao Vieira took the bronze, while another Russian, Andrey Krivov, finished 6th, more than two minutes behind the winner.
