Ukraine moves away from NATO

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich has made the decision to disband the National Center for Euro-Atlantic Integration, a move that marks a clear policy shift away from his predecessor’s leanings toward NATO.

In a separate order, Yanukovich also abolished two institutes dealing with national and international security. Both bodies were created in 2006 by Viktor Yushchenko to speed up a possible NATO membership action plan.

The current president has repeatedly stated that although Ukraine wants to maintain the current level of cooperation with NATO, it has no plans to join the alliance.
