Israel may allow UN probe into Freedom Flotilla attack

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is likely to agree to UN probe into his country’s storming of the so-called Freedom Flotilla in May, according to Israeli daily Haaretz.

The Israeli prime minister is under pressure from the US administration to accept the UN proposal, the source reported.

According to the newspaper, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has asked Israel’s Defense Minister Ehud Barak to give his answer by the weekend.

Ban Ki-moon’s proposal suggests that investigation is to be carried out by a review panel set to examine investigations by Israel and Turkey.

The panel is supposed to begin its work after the investigations of both countries are completed.

Israel is due to discuss the issue at the level of seven senior ministries and probably the cabinet, the source reported.

The Israeli attack on Gaza-bound aid ships on May 31 killed nine activists, including eight Turks and one American of Turkish origin.
