Russia given Rugby World Cup Sevens 2013

Russia given Rugby World Cup Sevens 2013

Russia will host the next World Cup Sevens, to be held in 2013, just three years before the sport returns to the Olympics. The news was announced by the International Rugby Board.

The event will be the biggest rugby tournament to be staged by Russia, which also makes its debut at the 15-man World Cup in New Zealand next year.

"We are delighted to announce that Rugby World Cup Sevens 2013 will be hosted by Russia," said IRB Chairman Bernard Lapasset.

"Council Members were extremely impressed with the Rugby Union of Russia bid and we are sure that Moscow will host a special tournament for the 24 men's and 16 women's teams and the thousands of visiting fans from all around the world."

The 2013 World Cup will be a competition that will provide an indication of which men's and women's nations might challenge for the ultimate Sevens prize – an Olympic gold medal.

Although rugby was in the Olympics until 1924, it is returning as a seven-a-side sport.

Wales and Australia won the respective men's and women's titles last year in Dubai.
