“Al Qaeda behind Moscow metro blasts” — Iraqi defense minister

The latest theory concerning the recent series of terrorist attacks to hit Russia puts Al Qaeda behind the attacks on the Moscow metro system in March.

That's according to the Iraqi defense minister, Abdel Kader Al-Obeydi, who spoke to RT’s sister channel Rusiya Al-Yaum.

"We face terror attacks organized by Al Qaeda very often in our country. This group is acting across the globe. They are getting support from abroad. I don't mean international governments,” he said. “But they are getting support from certain elements of society. This helps Al Qaeda to plot and perpetrate bombings in Russia. They are extremely active in the Republic of Dagestan, and even dared to attack Moscow's underground."

Earlier this month the director of Russia's Federal Security Service reported that all the organizers of the Moscow attacks had been identified.

He announced that three of them were killed by special forces after they resisted arrest.

Two female suicide bombers attacked separate stations on the capital's underground on March 29. Forty people were killed, and some 160 others injured.
